Here are some questions I'm commonly asked by parents.

Reading Time

How do I know if my child needs a tutor?
Some signs that tutoring may help include persistent difficulty with reading or writing despite effort, frustration with schoolwork, homework battles, or feedback from teachers that your child is behind. Parents often notice when a child avoids reading or loses confidence in his or her academic abilities. Even if your child is only slightly behind, it is wise to begin looking for tutoring options to find the best fit for your child. Early intervention is key, so don’t wait.

What grades and ages do you teach? I work with elementary through high school students who struggle with reading and writing.

Do you assess my child before tutoring starts? And if so, what is the charge, if any?
Yes. I typically begin with a series of informal assessments to identify your child’s strengths and specific skill deficits. This allows me to plan targeted instruction and set measurable goals as we move forward. After the free consultation call, if a client is ready to move forward with me to provide tutoring services, the informal assessment and report will take place during the first couple of sessions. If a potential client would like informal assessments to determine how to move forward with tutoring, I will complete them and provide a report for a fee of $100. If the client then contracts my tutoring services, this fee will be applied to the first couple of sessions.

Are sessions online or in-person?

All sessions are online, allowing your child to learn from home with minimal stress and no travel time while still receiving engaging, interactive instruction.

Can tutoring work even if my child already dislikes reading?
Absolutely. Building a positive learning experience is what I strive to do. Along with academic skills, I focus on boosting confidence, celebrating progress, and designing lessons that engage your child, so they feel successful rather than discouraged. My goal is to help your child enjoy reading again.

Do you help with homework?

Yes, when the homework assignment or project aligns with the skills I am addressing, I will provide instructional reinforcement, offer helpful strategies/techniques/tools, and give feedback on school assignments. With that said, my focus is to teach/remediate the underlying reading and writing skills used for all learning, so your child becomes more confident and independent with every school assignment.

How long are the sessions, and how often do you meet?
The length of each session and the number of sessions each week will depend on factors such as the age of your child and the nature of their reading difficulty. During the free consultation, we will discuss your concerns, and I will provide a recommendation. Generally speaking, children ages 5 and 6 (or sometimes older) do best when sessions are 30 min.; however, some children can maintain attention for longer periods, so I use a case-by-case basis. For students, 2nd or 3rd grade and older, who have dyslexia (or who exhibit symptoms of dyslexia, diagnosed or not), the recommendation is a minimum of 2 days/week for 50 min. The most important thing is consistency.

What if we need to reschedule?
Despite everyone’s best intentions to strive for consistency, it is understandable that life happens. I do have a 24-hr. cancelation policy and do everything I can to adjust schedules in the best interest of the student. We’ll discuss the cancellation and make-up policies during the free consultation call.

How will I know if my child is making progress?
Your child’s lessons are tied to the skill deficits found on the initial informal assessments (and parent/teacher input), and I check progress on those skills. I’ll share updates with you, including strengths, areas still growing, and suggestions for support at home, so you stay informed and involved.

Do you communicate with my child’s school or teachers?
If it’s helpful and with your permission, I’m happy to coordinate with your child’s teacher(s), IEP Team, etc. to ensure consistency between schoolwork and tutoring goals. Collaboration makes progress more seamless.

What if I’m not sure tutoring is right yet?
If you’re unsure, the free consultation is a great place to explore your questions without commitment. We’ll help you consider signs of need, possible next steps, and what success might look like for your child.
